What Is Plastic Surgery?

The term Plastic Surgery takes its origin from the Greek word Plastikos, which means to form or mold. It has nothing to do with plastic material or to make a patient ‘plastic’! Reconstructive surgery aims to reconstruct a part of the body or improve its functioning whereas cosmetic or aesthetic surgery aims at improving its appearance of it. Both of these techniques are used by plastic surgeons across the world.

Cosmetic surgery is an elective or ‘cold’ surgery that is performed on normal parts of the body to improve a person's appearance and/or improve signs of ageing. The number of cosmetic procedures across the world has been increasing, especially over the past decade. The six commonest surgeries are breast augmentation, liposuction, breast reduction, eyelid surgery, abdominoplasty, and hair transplant. While most procedures are done for women, procedures for men, especially hair transplant and penile enlargement procedures as also rhinoplasty have been increasing. Also increasing are the procedures for the millennial and trans-gender population.
